The contact form is an essential part of any website. Regardless of whether you have a corporate website, e-commerce website, blog, or just about any other type of site, it’s critical that your visitors are able to get in touch with you.
Your website visitors may want to reach out to you to enquire about your services, to ask a question about one of your products, to get customer service related to some issue that they’re having, or simply to get in touch with you for any number of other reasons.
When your website visitors want to reach out to you, it’s imperative that they can quickly find a way to contact you and that it’s easy for them to make that contact with you. You don’t want to have contact information buried somewhere on your site where it will be difficult for visitors to find, and you don’t want to make them jump through hoops to get in touch with you.
Most websites and blogs have a dedicated “contact” or “contact us” page that visitors can easily find in the primary navigation menu or in the site’s footer.
The most common way to allow visitors to get in touch with you is through the use of a form. While simply listing your email address is one option, a contact form will look more professional, will allow you to ask for specific information, and can reduce the amount of spam that you receive.
For WordPress users, the fastest and easiest way to add a custom contact form to a website or blog is by using the Simple Basic Contact Form plugin. With the help of this plugin, you can have a functioning contact form on your website in a matter of minutes, even if you have no technical experience. You’ll also have the option to customize the form to suit your exact needs.
In this tutorial, we’ll walk through the process of adding a contact form to your site. Simply follow along with these step-by-step instructions to get your own contact form set up. But first, let’s take a look at some of the details of this plugin.
Simple Basic Contact Form – Free WordPress Plugin
There are several different contact form plugins that you can use, but Simple Basic Contact Form stands out for a few reasons. First of all, it’s important to mention that this plugin is free and can be downloaded through the WordPress plugin repository. You can download it from this page or through your WordPress dashboard.
The Simple Basic Contact Form plugin focuses on simplicity and ease of use. Unlike some other contact form plugins, getting your form set up and live on your site is easy. It’s also well coded, which means that your form will function well and it won’t cause problems with your WordPress theme or other plugins.
You’ll be able to easily display your contact form on any page or post by inserting a simple shortcode (I’ll show you how in the step-by-step instructions below). The form can also be displayed anywhere in your theme through the use of a template tag. Most users won’t need this functionality, but it gives more flexibility for those that may want to integrate the plugin with their theme.
The core features of the plugin include:
- Customizable placeholder text for each form field
- Customizable success message, which can optionally include the text of the email
- Option to send a carbon copy of the email
- Settings panel that makes it easy to create and customize your form
- Styling options through custom CSS in the settings screen
- Choose to use PHP’s mail() or WP’s wp_mail()
- Protects against bad bots, malicious input, and other threats
- Optionally, display a captcha to reduce spam
If you’re looking for an easy way to add a reliable contact form to your WordPress-powered website or blog, Simple Basic Contact Form is an excellent choice.
How to Create Your Own Contact Form
Now that we’ve looked at some of the details of the plugin, we’ll walk through the simple process of installing the plugin and getting a live contact form on your site.
Step 1: Install and Active Simple Basic Contact Form
From your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New.
Now, you should see a screen like the one shown below. To the right, you’ll see a search field.
In the search field, type “Simple Basic Contact Form” and you should see the plugin near the top of the search results.
To install the plugin, click on the “Install Now” button.
When you click the button, the plugin will be installed. Once it is installed, the button text will change to “activate”. Click the button again to activate the plugin and it will be ready for use.
Step 2: Customize the Settings
After the plugin is installed and activated, you’ll be able to adjust the settings as needed, depending on how you want to use the plugin. One of the best things about this plugin is the fact that it will be automatically pre-configured for a basic contact form, so you may not even need to change anything with the settings. As a result, you can get a fully functioning contact form on your site in no time.
There are two different ways to access the settings. After you’ve activated the plugin by completing step 1 above, you should be led to a page that lists the plugins you have installed. Below “Simple Basic Contact Form” you’ll see a “settings” link. Clicking that link is the easiest way to access the settings.
The other option is to go to Settings > Contact Form from the vertical navigation menu in the WordPress dashboard. Either way, you’ll be led to the same settings options, shown below.
Click on “Plugin Options” and you’ll see a list of the options that you can configure as needed.
It’s likely that you’ll be able to leave most of these settings as is, but check to see if there is anything that should be changed to suit your needs.
The options are broked down into:
- General options (shown in the screenshot above)
- Field Labels & Placeholders
- Success & Error Messages
- Custom Content
Don’t be overwhelmed by all of the settings and options. As I mentioned earlier, the plugin is pre-configured for a basic contact form. It’s possible that you won’t need to change any of the settings. You’ll have a lot of options at your disposal, but you won’t need to spend a lot time getting things set up.
Step 3: Add the Form to Your Site
After you’ve adjusted the settings according to your needs, the next step is to add the form to a page on your site. For the vast majority of users, the shortcode will be the best way to add the form.
On the settings page, you’ll see the shortcode that you can use to enter your contact form into any page or post on your site.
Simply copy that shortcode to your clipboard, and paste it into the page editor for the page that you want to host your contact form. In most cases, this will be your Contact page, but it could be used on any page or post (if you don’t already have a contact page set up, you’ll need to create one by going to Page > Add New). Once you publish or update the page, your contact form should be live.
Step 4: Test the Contact Form
Once the form is live on your site, the last step is to test it and make sure that it works. Test it a few times by entering your own details. Make sure that the success and error messages are working properly, and check your email to be sure that you are receiving the messages that come through the contact form.
If you have any issues, head to the plugin settings and double-check to see if any of the settings/options need to be changed.
That’s all there is to it! You should now have a functioning and user-friendly contact form that allows your visitors to get in touch with you. The entire process can be done in a matter of just a few minutes with no need to touch any code and no technical experience required.
If you’re ready to add a contact form to your site, go ahead and install Simple Basic Contact Form today.
